I don't remember exactly how much this clay was, but I have checked Amazon not long ago for J-Mac Clay and it was like less than $4.00 a pond. This was an oil based clay that stays soft and will not harden, but to make a mould the clay doesn't have to be hard. Check the YouTube for how to make a mould for a sculpture.?

Then I started to buy books about drawing, sculpting and buy tutorial DVDs? that artist had made. I even bought Computer programs that helped me learn to sculpt, like ZBrush, Blender etc. Meanwhile I was sculpting with wax candles, Bread dough, and modeling clay. Just get started and don't wait. :)

Just bought some super sculpey and compared it with traditional clay & the PVC clay is harder than the water based clay. Another difference is that when you add a pice of clay to your figure with the PVC clay you just add it and smooth it, with traditional clay you have to scratch and moisten both of? the surfaces in order to keep them together. if u dont when you bake it the piece it'll explode! the name's actually Emmanuel :)

When I smooth I use a tiny bit of 70 % rubbing alcohol and brushes....some use baby oil, but I? have never used the oil. As for tools I use many different types... mainly dental spoons and the Kemper Laceing Tool. Hope this helps

Until i got my first block i didn't realise how that last statement appied to me. I am a convert from sculpey, wax, clay and many other media. Cx5 needs more gear to work that most other materials but it is soo worth it. The vids show it off beautifuly.

I've seen people who can hardly draw a strait line with a ruler do amazing life sculptures in clay. However drawing, lots of it, really helps with the overall visualisation of your piece and how you will get to construct it. I do cartoon style drawing, pencil with brush pen over it to work out my blocking and material folds etc. I dont say you have to be good at it but drawing does help no matter how rough.

In the meantime, I've managed to synthesize Mexican modeling paste, which was exciting. It doesn't melt either. *laugh*? Really flexible stuff, though. You can animate clay characters with bendy limbs that don't crack and crumble as you try to pose them. You'll never guess what I used for the wax component. :)

Once you get away from the true clays, like Chavant and WED clay you're into chemical compounds that share some properties of clay but not others, like Super Sclulpey which you have to fire to harden. Another amazing clay-like compound to explore is Adam Beane's Cx5, a TRULY amazing substance that you can both melt like chavant AND harden/tool? like magic-sculpt. It's extraordinary. - David

i made a clay hand myself? 10years ago. i covered my hand with clay and waited until it dried a little little. my sweat made my hand easily slip out of the clay hand glove. it looks like hulk's hand big and dumb but cool. it still sit on my dad's shelf til now :)

So. I? went into sculpture class today all amped like i was gonna make some masterpiece like this. I got my clay. Made my stand. Beat out the air bubbles and set it up. I got to about 1:28 in the video on my project when i realized it was hopeless. My sculpture looked like a retarted alien hand with tint fingers and a wrist the size of Jupiter.
